FAQ
How Much Should I Spend on a Bridal Shower Gift?
The average bridal shower guest spends at least $50 on a gift for the bride. That is not a hard and fast rule, however. In most cases, we recommend matching the dollar amount spent with how well you know the bride.
If for instance, you’re invited to a shower and aren’t especially close to the bride or are on a tight budget, it’s perfectly acceptable to shop for a $25-$40 gift.
Regular friends, co-workers and distant family members are typically expected to spend between $50 and $75 if they can afford to do so. Sometimes co-workers or a group of friends will opt to buy a joint gift. If that is the case, the group spend should be equal to at least $50 per person.
If you’re a close family member or friend, you may want to spend $100 or more — and that’s OK too. Again, if there’s a big ticket item that the wedding party or another group wants to buy for the bride, etiquette dictates that each person chip in $75.
What’s the Difference Between a Shower Gift and a Wedding Gift?
Traditionally, guests purchased gifts off of the wedding registry for both the bridal shower and wedding. While most guests today still purchase a present for the bridal shower, many opt to give cash or check as a wedding gift.
Much like with shower gifts, we recommend matching the size of the wedding gift to how well you know the bride or groom. If for instance, you don’t know the couple well, you could spend $25 on a shower gift and give a $50 check as a wedding present. Going below those amounts would be considered poor taste.
Why? Etiquette dictates that your wedding gift should at least cover the cost of your meal and drinks — and that means spending at least $50 if you’re going solo and a minimum of $75 if you’re bringing a date.
If you’re a close family member or friend, you should expect to spend $75 or more on a shower gift and $150-$200 on the wedding gift. While there is no maximum spend amount, you shouldn’t spend less than this if you know the couple well.
The Takeaway
Whether all of the gifts on the bride’s registry have already been spoken for or you want to give a more personalized or custom gift, our list of bridal shower gift ideas are sure to be a hit with any modern bride-to-be.
